Forestry Innovation Plan

DATE 22/09/2011

Forestry Tasmania recently released the Forestry Innovation Plan, which details a new business model for our organisation.

The Forestry Innovation Plan will guide our repositioning from a business focussed primarily on supplying product to the traditional sawmilling and woodchipping sectors, to one that will capitalise on emerging international markets for engineered wood products.

Over the short to medium term, we are expecting:

The convergence of these trends provides a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform Tasmania’s forest industry into one focussed on creating the wood products of the future.

Tasmania is well placed to become a regional hub for state-of-the-art wood products. We are recognised around the world for excellence in sustainable forest management and forest research. Under the Forestry Innovation Plan, existing infrastructure at key locations around the State will be retooled into processing facilities for rotary peeled veneers, engineered wood products such as laminated veneer lumber, and renewable energy such as torrefied wood and wood pellets.

We are working to develop demand for our wood products with international wood processors, particularly in China, with the ultimate aim of attracting investment in this value-added manufacturing to Tasmania.

In the interim, we will continue to export lower-quality peeler logs, which are unsuitable for processing at the State’s existing veneer mills. It’s also essential that export facilities for woodchips are maintained until infrastructure is in place to develop new products from harvesting and processing residues.
