Colleagues and Friends

With just a couple more sleeps before Christmas, our attention shifts away from work to family and friends. For many of us, it will be a welcome relief after a difficult year for the forest industry. For others, particularly those who have lost their jobs, or their financial security they will find little to celebrate in this festive season.

However, New Year is the opportunity to leave the past behind and look forward to a new beginning. 2011 will, I am sure, be a year to remember for the forest industry, and I am confident it will be a year to remember for all the right reasons.

If we dare to dream, 2011 might well be the year the industry and the anti forestry lobby set aside their differences to forge a new cooperative prosperous future for forestry. There is reason for optimism. The groundwork for such an agreement has been done. People are talking. There are signs entrenched positions are starting to wash away. There is still a long way to go, but wouldn't it be great if in the International Year of Forests, 2011, Tasmania was to lead the way with a lasting agreement.

The theme for the Year of Forests is "Celebrating Forests for People" - and that is a theme that can
unite us all.
