Designed by architectural and urban design firm Lyons and completed in 2009, this UTAS Medical Science building is brand new. A noticeable and innovative building, its organic appearance creates a striking, but not overbearing presence in the Hobart urban landscape.

The new building has been constructed on a site rich in archaeology, which was researched by a dig before the construction began. Dating back to the earliest days of Old Hobart Town, some of the artefacts and part of the original foundations are displayed in the new building.

Heritage Experience

Come along and see the building that accommodates the Menzies Research Institute Tasmania and the School of Medicine. Listen to archaeologist Parry Kostoglou talk about the dig that occurred on site before construction commenced, and see some of the artefacts on display. Architect Adrian Stanic will talk about the inspiration and design of the building. Look around the lower two floors of MS1 and view heritage-listed Hollydene House. Guided tours of the medical research lab will also be conducted.
