Metro Tasmania Pty Ltd is a state owned company established in February 1998. The company trades as Metro and operates bus services in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie. Metro is the largest passenger transport company in Tasmania.


Student Concession Travel Cards

Free student bus passes

If you are eligible for free student travel to or from your place of study, you need to apply for free travel through the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources (DIER). Once your application is approved by DIER and DIER notifies Metro, Metro will issue you with your Greencard at no cost. If you lose your Greencard, you will have to pay for a replacement card.

If the Free Travel period on your current Greencard has expired, you need to reapply again through the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources (DIER). Once your application is approved by DIER and DIER notifies Metro, Metro will activate a new Free Travel period to your existing Metro Greencard.

To use a Metro Greencard outside of the Free Travel period (ie; after 7.00pm Monday to Friday, on weekends or public holidays) or when the Free Travel period has expired, you will need to add travel credit to it.

Full-time students up to and including the school year in which they turn 18, may be eligible for either a Free Student Pass or a Free Student Transfer Pass if they attend:

  • A recognised infant, primary, secondary or senior secondary school
  • University of Tasmania
  • Australian Maritime College
  • Australian Technical College
  • Tasmanian Academy
  • Tasmanian Polytechnic
  • Tasmanian Skills Institute

Non-urban students

Full-time students up to and including the year in which they turn 18, and who are living in non-urban areas as defined by the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources (DIER), may be eligible for a 90-cent student fare when travelling into an urban area from a non-urban area. Metro encourages all students to apply for a Metro Greencard, to be eligible for a Student Metro Greencard applicants need to attend one of the following:

  • A recognised infant, primary, secondary or senior secondary school
  • University of Tasmania
  • Australian Maritime College
  • Australian Technical College
  • Tasmanian Academy
  • Tasmanian Polytechnic
  • Tasmanian Skills Institute
