The Log - Issue Two - machine evaluation workshops in May

A second half-day workshop was held in three states in May, featuring international visiting scientist Ernie Heidersdorf, the recently retired research director of the Forest Engineering Research Institute of Canada (FERIC).

Building upon feedback gained from the first series of workshops, held in December 2007, workshop instructors Dr Mauricio Acuna and Ernie Heisendorf attracted CRC partners and contractors to the targeted, operational workshops.

The instructors raised awareness of the resources that are available to help frontline managers understand the issues and make the most of their valuable time when determining machine productivity and cost. This included collecting useful information in an operational setting – “snapshot”, shift-level assessment, onboard computers, onboard data loggers, detailed time studies; and acting on the knowledge gained.

The instructors emphasised that CRC researchers are available to assist with the more academic side of machine evaluation, and to provide training on evaluation techniques, while there are also some practical things that machine operators can do themselves.

Guest instructor Ernie Heisendorf has been involved in operational evaluation of forestry equipment for his entire 36 year career and offers a very practical approach to research. As research director with the Forest Engineering Research Institute of Canada he was responsible for the

technical aspects of the development, conduct and implementation of FERIC Division’s research delivered by over 30 professional research staff and ensuring it fit with the needs and expectations of forest industry clients and partner organisations and agencies, until his retirement earlier this year.

Plans are now underway for Ernie to return to work with the CRC for three months in Hobart with Mauricio Acuna and in Western Australia with John Wiedemann, from September.
