Poatina Main Road Longford Township - Road Reinstatement

This project involves restoring the road surface along a section of Poatina Main Road (which is locally known as Wellington Street) from the Western Rail Line through to Lyttleton Street, in the Longford Township.

The work will involve removing the damaged road surface and replacing this with a new surface and will be undertaken on one side of the road at a time so that one lane will be open to traffic at all times.

The work has been designed to ensure the least possible disruption to road users through carefully planned staging of the works and the use of Variable Message Boards.  The works will be undertaken on one side of the road at a time so that one lane will be open to traffic at all times. Delays to the travelling public can be expected in the vicinity of the construction works for the duration of the project.

The benefits of the project to road users will be greater safety as a result of the improved surface of the road.

The project is funded by the State Government in the amount of $1 million.

Current Status

Roadworks commenced in November 2012 and have involved digging out the existing road and replacing this with new material.

The first section from the Railway Line through to Union Street has been completed. The reinstatement of the traffic island and pedestrian crossing will be done early in January 2013.

Work on the whole site will take a break over the Christmas period and is scheduled to recommence on Monday 7 January 2013.

The second section of works is from Union Street to Lyttleton Street, part of this work has already been completed, however the location of the trees in the street will slow progress down and a detour may be necessary at times during some of the works.

The contractor will endeavour to accommodate access to all properties during the day as much as practical, but there will be some times when this is not possible. The works will be back filled at the end of each day to open the road back up to traffic.

It is anticipated that all works will be completed by early February 2013 weather permitting.
