Tasman Highway and Gladstone Main Road Upgrades

Background Information

The Department of Infrastructure Energy and Resources (DIER) has programmed several road upgrades along the Tasman Highway and Gladstone Main Road.  This $14.4M project is part of the $42M North East Freight Roads program, focussed on improving the safety of the freight road network in the North East of Tasmania.

The Tasman Highway and Gladstone Main Road forms a freight route between agricultural farms, timber plantations and their destination port of Bell Bay.

The project will upgrade the sections of the Tasman Highway and Gladstone Main Road from the townships of Derby through to Herrick.  Upgrade work includes:

  • road widening
  • improved geometry for the safety of all road users; and
  • the inclusion of new school bus bays

Location

The project site is located between Derby and Herrick.  A map of the proposed location and works is provided below:

Current Status

  • The project is currently in the tendering phase
  • Construction is expected to commence in early 2013
