Mathinna/Evercreech Bridge Replacements

The Department of Infrastructure Energy and Resources (DIER) has programmed a bridge replacement program for five bridges in the Mathinna/Evercreech area.  This bridge replacement program is federally funded under the North East Freight Roads Program and will provide substantial improvements in transport efficiencies for heavy vehicles.

The five bridges are:

  • South Esk River Bridge - Mathinna Plains Road (Bridge No.3043)
  • Delvin Creek Bridge - Mathinna Plains Road (Bridge No.1350)
  • Delvin Creek Bride (2) - Mathinna Plains Road (Bridge No.2951)
  • South Esk River Bridge - Evercreech Road (Bridge No.1251)
  • South Esk River Bridge (2) - Evercreech Road Bridge - (Bridge No.422)

The bridges are planned to be replaced between November 2012 and March 2014

Location of Works

The bridges are located in the Break O'Day Council municipality within the Mathinna/Evercreech area. All 5 bridges are timber structures with one lane of traffic. The timber structures are nearing the end of their design life with 3 bridges having either 5 tonne or 10 tonne load limits applied. These load limits affect freight movement and thus the bridges need to be replaced. The new bridges will all be one lane and will be constructed in concrete with a 100 year design life. The bridges will be designed for flooding conditions. A map of the bridge locations is provided.

Impact of works

Three of the new bridges will be built alongside the existing bridges with no interruption to traffic. Temporary road closures will be required for bridge 2951 and a temporary detour for Bridge 1350. The road closure will only affect traffic travelling from Mathinna/Fingal to Ledgerwood. Traffic will be detoured via Sandhurst Road during this closure. Any detours will be advertised and sign posted.

Current status

  • The project is currently in the tendering phase.
  • Construction works are programmed to commence in November 2012.
