Advertising a Community Event

Temporary Signs for Community Events

Many groups in Tasmania advertise their events by putting up signs in the State road reserve.  These signs can be significant road safety hazards, as well as potentially detracting from the natural beauty of our State, so the Department has guidelines to regulate their use.  These guidelines are designed to maximise the opportunities for local groups with small budgets to promote their events, while maintaining the safety and efficiency of the State road network.  Community Event Signs - Policy and Guidelines, (PDF)

Approval is required for temporary signs.

Signs will generally only be authorised for display in locations pre-approved by DIER.  In the event that no suitable pre-approved location exists in the area you want to display the sign, please indicate on your application.  Alternate location(s) will be dealt with on a case by case basis.

It is an offence to erect any sign on a State road without written authorisation.

Applications must be received by us a minimum of 28 days before the first date you want to display the sign, in order to allow sufficient time for the application to be assessed and for successful applicants to arrange for the manufacture of a sign. You will need to fill in and submit an Community Events Signs Application, (PDF)
