World Class Reserves - Protecting Forests

“Only half the forest managed by Forestry Tasmania is available for sustainable timber production. A network of formal and informal reserves on State forest protects values such as flora, fauna, soil, water and cultural heritage.

More than one million hectares, or 79%, of Tasmania’s oldgrowth forests are protected in the reserve system. Oldgrowth forests are also highly valuable sources of quality timbers, which are used to produce the furniture, wood design, and boat building materials for which Tasmania is famous.

Forestry Tasmania manages small areas of oldgrowth forest outside the reserve system, so that these products can continue to be produced. In turn, this supports Tasmanian innovation and regional employment.

An effective reserve system not only ensures that large areas of land are protected, but that examples of different types of ecosystems are included in these reserves and preserved for future generations”.
