Aquatic Consultancy

The Service operates an external aquatic consultancy as a semi-autonomous business enterprise. The Consultancy has been in operation for since 1994, specialising in environmental monitoring within Tasmania’s freshwater ecosystems.

The Service operates an external aquatic consultancy as a semi-autonomous business enterprise. The Consultancy has been in operation for the past 17 years, specialising in environmental monitoring within Tasmania’s freshwater ecosystems. It has been principally dedicated to servicing Hydro Tasmania with quality data, advice and investigative work in the following areas:

  • water quality sampling, analysis and interpretation
  • nutrient and sediment loading estimates in streams
  • zooplankton and phytoplankton sampling and enumeration
  • pest, native and acclimatised fish survey and identification
  • macro-invertebrate sampling, identification and enumeration
  • aquatic macrophyte surveys
  • shallow lake ecology studies
  • modelling and mapping of sediment re-suspension dynamics in lakes.

As a result of this work experience, the Consultancy has developed a broad range of knowledge and expertise in aquatic monitoring. It has collected a large assortment of specialised aquatic monitoring equipment and it has an exemplary record in fulfilling contracts and delivering top class scientific, technical and analytical services on time and within budget.

Skills and Services

Examples of the skills and services available through the Consultancy include:

  • Physical and chemical water quality monitoring using Hydrolab and hand held field instruments to measure dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH, turbidity, total dissolved solids, temperature and photosynthetically active radiation
  • Routine water sampling and analysis of nutrients, metals and alkalinity
  • Phytoplankton and zooplankton sampling and identification to species level, including plankton counts and biomass assessment
  • Sediment sampling by using remote surface techniques and divers, analysis of chemical pollutants, and macro and micro invertebrate counts, population assessment and identification to genus and species levels
  • Benthic mapping using submersible video and still cameras to assess macrophyte abundance and benthic habitats with subsequent production of professional GIS maps and charts
  • Remote area fish stock assessment surveys using a range of techniques, including backpack electro-fishing, boat electro-fishing, gill netting, fyke netting and bait trapping
  • Routine macro-invertebrate sampling and identification to provide biological indexes on ongoing health of water bodies based on species assemblages
  • Ecological baseline habitat assessments and environmental impact assessments with ongoing environmental monitoring around engineering projects and installations
  • Deployment and maintenance of electronic static logging devices used to monitor physical and chemical parameters, currents, water level, tidal range and photosynthetically activated radiation
  • Chlorophyll extraction and analysis of phytoplankton and benthic algae
  • Mooring construction and deployment
  • Expedient delivery of professional scientific reports.
