Prevent Habitat Degradation

Land managers and community groups can reduce the impact on the freshwater environment by adopting sustainable land and water management practices. Some of these measures are provided in this section.

Land managers and community groups can reduce the impact on the freshwater environment by adopting sustainable land and water management practices, including:

  • leaving an adequate natural buffer strip along the river edge (riparian zone)
  • leaving snags within the rivers, or realigning them if necessary
  • ensuring stream banks remain intact to minimising erosion
  • not introducing any fish into the river
  • fencing stock out of the rivers
  • planting appropriate native vegetation along rivers and
  • reducing or eliminating contaminants entering the rivers.
