Maria Island ferry operator sought

07/02/2014

The Parks and Wildlife Service is calling for expressions of interest for a single passenger ferry operator for Maria Island National Park.

PWS Director Visitor Services Stuart Lennox said the recent Maria Island Ecotourism Feasibility Study highlighted the importance of a reliable, regular passenger ferry service for the island and the PWS is keen to secure such an operation as soon as possible.

“Establishing a quality, affordable regular passenger ferry service is the first step in implementing the key recommendations of the study, which also defined a future vision for the Maria Island visitor experience,” Mr Lennox said.

“We are now calling for an operator to provide a consistent, high quality passenger and freight service with a fit for purpose vessel to Darlington on Maria Island.

“We are intending to offer the exclusive right for the regular year-round service to the island, along with potential non-exclusive service enhancement opportunities including guided tours, retail sales and equipment hire.”

The Expression of Interest document is available by contacting Tourism Services manager Jen Fry at Jen.Fry@parks.tas.gov.au.

An information session for interested parties will be held on 5 March 2014 and intending participants are asked to register with the contact officer by 26 February 2014.
