SECURITY ENVIRONMENT

If you are aware of suspicious activity ring the 24-hour National Security Hotline on 1800 123 400.

There is presently no known specific threat to Australia and the level of counter-terrorism alert is at MEDIUM under the National Counter-Terrorism Alert System. Australian security and intelligence agencies are constantly monitoring the global situation.

There is no reason for Tasmanians to stay away from public places or change our normal routines. It is essential that we do not allow the threat of terrorism to change the way of life we value so highly. If the Government receives credible information that there are places you should stay away from, you will be officially advised through the news media and relevant authorities.

Compared to many other countries, Australia faces a lower overall level of security threat. However, this does not mean that Australia has been free from acts of terrorism. Nor does it provide a guarantee for the future.

If travelling overseas, it is essential that you keep yourself informed of the security status of the countries you are visiting. Before you leave Australia, contact the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on 1300 555 135 and they can give you the up-to-date security status for more than 120 countries. You can also access this information on the Web by clicking here. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade also has a registration service for Australians overseas to make it easier to contact you in an emergency.
