Liberals suspended sentence policy vindicated
- 04 Feb, 2014
Reports today that a man who pleaded guilty to an assault in Launceston was already serving a suspended sentence for two similar assaults, highlights the need for suspended sentences to be abolished.
Critics of the Liberals’ plan to abolish suspended sentences are out of touch with community expectations, particularly when additional sentencing options are proposed which will be available for all offenders.
The community simply cannot fathom why offenders who commit serious crimes can walk from the court without serious sanction.
We’ve seen shocking instances of alcohol related violence in other parts of Australia and the surrounding debate around weak sentences.
Common sense tells us we need to send strong messages that violence will not be tolerated, and that a suspended sentence for an act of serious violence is completely out of touch with community expectations.
A majority Liberal Government will act on behalf of the community and ensure those who commit serious crimes are dealt with appropriately.
