Overview - Schools and Colleges

Rose Bay High
Public EducationTasmania’s public education system aims to provide a quality education and rich learning experiences for all students. We want every student to have the opportunity to achieve their potential by providing them with the skills they need for the future.

The Department of Education is responsible for education from the early years to Year 12 and Vocational Education and Training (VET) delivered through senior secondary schools, colleges, Trade training Centres as well as adult learning (LINC).

There are 192 Tasmanian government schools and eight senior secondary colleges grouped into three Learning Service areas: North, North-West and South, each managed by a General Manager.

The Department of Education uses our resources through Principals and school communities to lead school improvement and work with teachers to focus on the individual needs of students.

Teachers in Tasmanian government schools are required to be qualified of good character, and registered with the Tasmanian Teachers Registration Board.

Year 11 and 12 Education

Year 11 and 12 education is provided through the eight colleges. Some combined and regional secondary schools also provide year 11 and 12 education and training services either on their own or in partnership with the colleges and/or TasTAFE.

The senior secondary schools and colleges provide Year 11 and 12 education services to young students to support their achievement of the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE), and their entry into the workforce or further education and training.  This includes pastoral care together with a diverse selection of academic and vocational courses, the latter of which may be provided in partnership with TasTAFE or other providers.
