Personal Information Protection

Any personal information collected by the Department of Education is protected by the provisions of the Personal Information Protection Act 2004. Schedule 1 of the Personal Information Protection Act outlines the Personal Information Protection Principles that apply in Tasmania. These are the standards by which the Department of Education collects and handles personal information.

‘Personal information’ is information or opinion in any recorded format about an individual whose identity is apparent or is reasonably ascertainable from the information or opinion. This includes information about individuals who have died in the past 25 years.
Personal information can be almost any information linked to an individual, including name, address, sex, age, or health information.
The Department of Education’s Personal  Information Protection Policy provides more information on how the Department collects, stores, uses and discloses personal information.
The “PIP” Policy provides information about:
  • What is considered personal information;
  • Why the Department collects and stores your personal information;
  • How you can access your personal information; and
  • When the Department of Education may use or disclose your personal information.
Under the Personal Information Protection Act, you may request copies of your personal information, or if your information is incorrect, you may request that your information be amended/updated.
