Improving telecommunications for regional and remote Tasmanians

I welcome today’s announcement by Optus to invest in new telecommunications infrastructure in remote and regional areas of Tasmania.

Optus is investing $17.5 million on a program to improve its 4G coverage in Tasmania including building 35 mobile sites across the State. This is in addition to work already done to build 10 new sites and upgrade 36 others.

Quality, reliable telecommunications are essential to regional economies like Tasmania.

They support people and families who live, work and travel in regional and remote areas.

They also support consumers and businesses who increasingly rely on mobile technology tools and visitors who expect to be able to search up their next accommodation location or tourist attraction.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government continues to support and invest in vital communications for the state.

We are working with the Australian Government to support the Commonwealth’s Mobile Black Spots Program which is designed to improve telecommunications in regional and remote areas.
