Tasmanians safer under the Liberals

The Hodgman Liberal Government has a clear plan to tackle crime and keep the community safe.

ABS stats released today confirm our plan is working, with Tasmania recording the lowest or equal lowest victimisation rate in Australia for eight of 11 serious crime categories.

This is great news for the Tasmanian community and reaffirms our policy to increase police numbers to 1233 by 2018 after they were savagely cut under the Labor-Green Government.

It’s just one of the ways we have cracked down on criminals along with the introduction of mandatory sentences for serious assaults on police, tougher penalties for police evaders, and the phasing out of suspended sentences so if you do the crime, you do the time.

Of course we know there is more to do, and we will continue to advocate for stronger action, including the legislation blocked by Labor that would have introduced minimum mandatory sentences for those who commit serious sexual offences against children.

While Labor and the Greens will always make excuses for why they are soft on crime, the Hodgman Government will do everything we can to keep the community safe and I congratulate Tasmania Police on these great figures.
